Sheila
has loved colour since childhood; the ladies in her
colouring books always wore 2-piece suits in bright
colours – yellow, turquoise, pink – the
jackets having black collars and cuffs! Sheila’s
home near St Andrews reflects her love of colour and
the ‘special light’ in Scotland particularly
in the East Neuk of Fife and the islands off the west
coast offer unique opportunities for outdoor artists.
Painting on location is preferable but the winter
season in Scotland can be bitterly cold especially
when the wind brings the Arctic temperatures south
- more suited to skiers than artists!
There is something therapeutic about
sitting on a rock on the Island of Mull painting a
sunset without a thought in one’s head except
for the task in hand – it’s wonderful
for relieving stress! Sheila’s painting styles
include representational seascapes and landscapes,
village scenes, still life and abstract. Sheila paints
in watercolour, pastel, oil, acrylic, ink and mixed
media. In the late 1980s Sheila studied watercolour
under Julia Wroughton RA on the Isle of Mull, and
watercolour is still her favourite medium although
oils run a close second!
Sheila’s
background lies within various industries including
agriculture, horticulture, golf, travel, leisure,
and textiles. Wherever she travels Sheila keeps her
camera handy for those unexpected photo opportunities!
Sheila was born in St Andrews, Fife
and has lived in London and Edinburgh. Her home is
in the village of Strathkinness, 3 miles from St Andrews,
where she shares her home with Opal, a most affectionate
Russian Blue cat.
